In 1982, a zookeeper at Japan’s Izu Shabonten Zoo had a brilliant idea that has been a success for 40 years. While cleaning one of the #capybaras pens, he noticed that these friendly rodents were gathering in a pool of warm water to soak in during the winter cold. That’s when he decided to fill a pool with warm water for them. Since then, the zoo has maintained an annual tradition of warm winter baths for its capybaras.
Capybaras are known for their love of water and thanks to the keeper’s initiative, they can enjoy a warm bath in winter. This year, Izu Shabonten Zoo celebrates 40 years of this tradition that has been a hit with capybaras and zoo visitors alike.
